Hello! I am Jim Pengov, owner of Pengov Inc. I am a general contractor, trim carpenter, and remodeler. I serve Lorain County and parts of Cuyahoga, Medina, Erie, and Huron counties, and I work outside of these areas on occasion. I've been a full-time experienced professional in the field since 1986, specializing in kitchens, baths, and trim, but I do many other things as well. I work with the homeowner or builder to help them achieve their project goals. See the list on the bottom of this page for places you may have seen my residential and light commercial work.*
What I do:
I am experienced in all aspects of, kitchen and bath remodeling, drywall, light electrical and plumbing, painting, windows, doors, and more. I’ve worked in a cabinet shop building cabinets, veneering, and laminating, and I’ve made many built-ins and quality furniture pieces. I have several years of experience in finish carpentry in high-end and mid-range homes and light commercial buildings. I am a professional licensed general contractor with liability insurance and Worker’s Compensation, and I follow all applicable laws regarding things such as permits and inspections, etc. If I bring in any subcontractors on a job, I will only use those who are licensed (if applicable), insured, and whose work I know, and who I trust will uphold my quality and professional standards.
Whether your home is valued in the tens of thousands or the millions, we're committed to doing a superior job at a fair price. I meet with homeowners personally, so there are no sales commissions to build into the cost of your project. Perhaps one of the biggest ways we stay competitive is by bringing our experience and assuring that your project is done right the first time. Our reputation and your satisfaction depend on it.

The History of Pengov Inc.

I went to school for carpentry in Perrysburg, Ohio. I was from a family of generations of carpenters and tradesmen. I love working with my hands and with wood. Shortly after graduation, I worked in a cabinet shop for a while as a cabinet builder and supervisor, and also for a remodeling company. My first project right out of school, I worked with the carpentry instructor on a remodeling project that was photographed for Better Homes and Gardens magazine. My second project that summer was rebuilding a porch on a home in Perrysburg’s historic district.

In 1990, I moved to Avon and applied for a job as a trim carpenter with Kopf Builders. I asked him to give me one week to prove that I could do finish work. The man who interviewed me was reluctant at first, because I was young. I'm grateful that he gave me a chance. I enjoyed working in those big luxury homes, and I learned a lot from some of the more experienced trim carpenters there.

I left Kopf Builders to work for a smaller company in 1993 that primarily subcontracted some of the residential and light commercial trim work for Dale Yost Construction in Elyria, Ohio. It was only a short time later that the owner retired from his business for health reasons. My friend, Greg, and I started Classic Finish Carpentry together in 1994, to continue trimming for Yost, and we also did some remodeling. During our last year together, we had hired my older brother, a cabinet maker, who had moved back to Ohio from out-of-state. He hadn’t done trim before, but had also gone to school for carpentry, and with his woodworking skills, it didn’t take too long for him to pick it up. Greg and his wife moved out of state in December of 1999, and I bought his half of the business.

I started a new company, Pengov Brothers, when Greg left, and my brother became my new partner from 2000-2004. We incorporated in 2001. We continued subcontracting trim work for Yost and hired more guys to help us keep up with the work load. Sadly, my brother’s wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in early 2003. By early 2005, my brother decided he no longer wanted to be a business owner, and he closed down Pengov Brothers, Inc.
When I learned that he was thinking about giving up the business, I applied for a new corporation with a generic name, just in case I would need it to continue to work, and didn't use it for business until I had to. We began doing business as
Pengov, Inc. in 2005. We brought on the employees who had worked for Pengov Brothers, including my brother, to work with us. The crew specializes in new home trim. I work on remodeling projects personally, using licensed and insured sub-trades only when special licensing or expertise is required for a specific part of your project.
